Your emergency survival food prepping plan should include a mushroom bug out bag filled with long-term storage of the genetics you would like to grow with virtually no water, sunlight, or power. Use the items below to create your home mushroom grow area and practice each of these few cultivation steps before you need to use them!
Choose your mushroom genetics based on what your family would like to eat and the temperature of your survival location (Lion's Mane & King Oyster #1). Mycelium will grow on most grains so select your inoculation grains based on storage and additional applications (Brown Rice #1). Mushroom fruiting substrates are customizable to specific mushrooms and many can grow on hardwood stove pellets alone. (Oak & Fruit Mix #1). Use a pressure cooker to sterilize if adding supplements. (Wheat Bran #1).
Lion's Mane makes a great steak, crab cake, or fried shrimp as a patriot survival food. Select the mushroom genetics that will produce the food that your family prefers. If you are going to be surviving you might as well enjoy dinner with your family.
10 LBS of Rye Berries for under $20. You will not beat this deal. Inject your Lion's Main Liquid Culture directly into your sterilized grain bag for quick growth.
It's as simple as injecting your Liquid Culture Syringe into your sterilized brown rice in a canning jar, or microwave instant brown rice bag, to get started. Your emergency prepping food will grow into a solid white block of Mushroom Mycelium that is then placed into your sterilized wood pellet substrate for fruiting. Instant rice bags arrive sterilized and store well until needed.
The final step is to add your Mushroom Mycelium into your substrate for final Mycelium growth and fruiting. Some varieties of Mushrooms require additional nutrients mixed into your substrate for larger Mushrooms. Lion's Mane likes a little Wheat Brand and Gypsum added to hardwood pellets before turning into your survival food.
When adding Wheat Bran, or any other supplement, to your substrate you will have to sterilize in a canning pressure cooker at 15 PSI for 2 and 1/2 hours. If you just use the hardwood pellets for your patriot survival food, then you can pasteurize them by dumping boiling water on them in a bucket and letting them sit for 2 hours wrapped in a blanket.
Mushroom bags contain an injection port to allow you to add your Grain or Substrate into the bag, sterilize it in a pressure cooker, then inject your Mushroom Liquid Culture into your sterilized grain or add your mycelium grain block into your sterilized substrate, all while keeping everything sterilized.
Several parts of this process require sterilized liquid, grains, substrates, and equipment. Water boils at 212 degrees and sterilization requires 250 degrees, so pressurized steam for 30 minutes for liquid culture recopies, 90 minutes for canning jars filled with grain for inoculation, and 2 1/2 hours for blocks of hardwood pellet substrate with wheat bran supplement.
Grow pulled pork sandwiches for your survival food using King Oyster Mushrooms. The benefit of this mushroom is that it will grow directly on hardwood stove pellets without a need to supplement the substrate which would then require sterilization.
This survival food packs an energy punch. This mushroom requires colder temps, additional nutrients, and only has one step in the process. It's easy to create and leave alone in a root seller until it's done.
The best method for storage of mushroom genetics are slants that will last 2 years in cooler temperatures. Move genetics to another slant after that time to continue your preferred genetics.
Creating an environment that allows your mushrooms to thrive is cheap and easy. It does not require the water, sunlight, or electricity of other sustainable survival food strategies. An ideal location is a root seller and ours is stable at 58 degrees. This allows us to select several different varieties of mushrooms throughout the year. Long-term storage of Mushroom Genetics for quick and easy food production is easily achieved with most varieties.
Survival food grow tents designed for mushroom production are cheap and easy. You are always able to create DIY plastic sheeting rooms that work to keep humidity in and the environment sterilized for those few steps where that is required.
Your survival food production location temperature will determine if you need a heater or air conditioner to adjust your growing environment. Temperatures are not extreme so achieving necessary ranges during the process is easy, especially if you are underground.
It is much easier to grow mycelium in grain when it's stored in a plastic tote to control temperature, humidity, and darkness. The same can be accomplished after you add your mycelium grain into your sterilized wood pellet substrate bag. Fresh Air Exchange is important so you will drill holes in these totes. Use one clear tote to create a sterilized still air box with arm holes for your emergency prepping food production area.
During the fruiting stage of survival food production, it is important to add humidity to your growing space. It can be achieved for as little as $12 with a simple mister placed in the correct location, if you live in a region that is not very humid.
To replicate your Mushroom Genetics for medium term storage, you could choose to simply place a drop of Liquid Culture with Mycelium in the middle of a Petri Dish with Agar and watch it grow. Store in cool dark location until needed for emergency prepping food security plan implementation.
During the early stages of Mushroom Reproduction it is important to keep bacteria and other contaminants in very small numbers. Spray everything except your mushroom mycelium, grain, and substrate with 70% Alcohol while working and keep it clean.
